CHAPTER EIGHT

A FEW MINUTES LATER, the flight attendant collected the remains of their meal, a sign that they would begin landing soon. The dishes and cups collected, seats upright, Simone and Griffin shared light conversation for the remainder of the flight, his stories, his presence helping to keep her inevitable sadness at bay.

When the plane landed, thumping gently on the Charles De Gaulle runway, he looked around at the shifting energy of their fellow passengers. The couple, the business woman who’d had a very pleasant flight indeed, the man near the front of first class, all changing from a waiting, passive attitude to a more active one, ready to take on a new city, a new country, ready for the business—or pleasure—that they had come all this way for.

Simone felt that Griffin wanted to say something. She felt she knew what that something was. She’d seen it in other men, even some women, over the years. Finally, he spoke.

"I’d love to keep in touch with you," Griffin said. His voice was low and deep, filled with subtle emotion.

Simone looked away from his intensely dark eyes. "I can’t. I shouldn’t have even…" Her words tapered off as she thought about what they had done in the bathroom, the hot urgency of it, the impetus behind it, to prove to herself that she was not what her husband had said, to feel something good again after the sharp and stabbing pain of Dean’s betrayal.

"I’m a married woman, Griffin," she finally said.

"I know. But you’re unhappy and while that is the case, I want to fill your life with some sort of joy. I’m not sure what it is about you, Simone, but I feel that if I let you go from my life, it’ll be the biggest mistake I’ll ever make."

His declaration humbled her. But she could not be that kind of woman.

She shook her head. "I’m sorry. I can’t."

He sighed, disappointment darkening his eyes even more. "At least take my card," he said.

Before she could say anything else, he took a card from his wallet and pressed it into her hand. "You may never use it, but there’s a better chance for me to see you again if you have it."

"Okay." She sighed.
